DUNLAOGHAIRE
Part Single Part Two Storey Courtyard Extension To A Victorian Terraced House
Location: Dunlaoghaire South County Dublin
Status:Pre Planning
Client:Private
The brief was to provide for new family living space and a bedroom and
bathroom to a two storey terraced dwelling with an existing two storey return
on a tight site orientated North West to South East with rear access onto a
laneway.
The original two storey return is to be demolished due to it’s structural condition
and a new L shaped part two storey part single storey extension built to replace
the existing, containing an open plan kitchen, dining and living area on the
ground floor with a new bedroom come study and bathroom on the first floor,
reusing the existing levels of both the original return and the rear terrace
which opens off the main reception rooms located at the entrance level.
The L shape form wraps around the existing terrace allowing East, South and
West light into the new extension and the existing reception rooms and opens
out on all sides to both the higher level courtyard and the reconfigured rear
garden which leads to the new concealed carport and store.
The new extension is designed so as not to impact negatively on the existing
house and is constructed of a steel frame clad in timber and connected to the
existing house at first floor level with a rooflit frameless glazed link.
The floor to ceiling glazing on all sides, roof lights, higher floor to ceiling height
in the new living area, internal floor surfaces continued flush externally and
the view from the main entrance through the new addition to the garden all
contribute to creating a sense of spaciousness and transparency.
