Visual Centre for Contemporary Art
The propsal is for the provision of a new national centre for contemporary art
located on Carlow College Campus.
The building is designed as two volumes and a large open courtyard space. The gallery spaces are clearly articulated as a robust massive stone clad volume to establish a powerful presence in response to the large forms of Carlow Cathedral and the main college buildings and in contrast to the pristine finer glazed screen clad bar and restaurant volume.
The new courtyard space creates an important landmark within the campus and can be used as an external gallery space.
The central rooflit atrium allows for generous flowing space and natural light is admitted in a controlled fashion through carefully positioned openings.
